What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session
For some, piecing together family outfits comes naturally, for others, it is just not so much. Whichever type of person you are, I've put together some information to help you out!
Your vibe
You want these photos to reflect you and your family, clothes that you and your family are comfortable in and feel good is the key, flatter your shape, wear something that fits and you feel confident in. We all know kids are terrible at hiding their emotions when they're uncomfortable, and we don't want them looking resentful in their dress and bowtie in all of the photos.
In the summer months, dresses and lights color/material clothes are always a hit and in the cooler months, close toes shoes, jeans, sleeves, and layers and some patterns would look good as well.
Some possible vibes you could go for: earthy, minimalist, punk, and playful.
Your colors
Think of how you are going to use these photos in the future. If they're going to be for Holiday cards then you probably want your outfit to reflect that holiday color pallet. The red and green combination may scream the Christmas theme and you don't want to curse your past self when you go to make your easter cards online in a couple of months because your photos are clashing with all of the holiday templates.
Not everyone has to be matchy matchy! Everyone just has to flow together. Prints are okay if you do them correctly, just try to avoid large logo prints, and don't let logos and TV characters distract from your personality. You don't want everyone wearing prints and patterns because it may start to look like an optical illusion. Try to stick with solids and natural color pallets and just one person wearing a print because it's easier!
Accessories
You've done all of your shopping and have the best, curated family outfits. Don't forget the little things that could throw off your outfits, and you will be surprised but most of the time its shoes that can make or break the outfit. I'm not saying go out and buy some fancy dress shoes but having simple shoes that reflect the vibe you're going for a bit more can really help pull it all together.
Let's talk Hats! In general, hats could look very nice in the photos when coordinated with the outfit, but there is one category of hats - baseball hat - that could block the eyes partially in the photos and will not be an image you may want to print, so personal recommendation would be to stay away from baseball hats unless its a signature look.
